Fertilizer requirements in muskmelon

  • Apply well-rotted FYM/ compost @ 10-15 t/acre at the time of land preparation and mix well with the soil.
  • Use urea 110 kg, single super phosphate 155 kg, and muriate of potash 40 kg per acre.
  • Before sowing the seeds, add the full amount of SSP, Muriate of Potash, and one-third of urea.
  • Use the remaining amount of urea near the roots, and away from touching the stem and mix well in the soil during the initial development period.
  • When the crop is 10-15 days old, then sprinkle with good quality as well as 19:19:19 + micronutrient @ 2-3g / liters of water for good growth of the crop.

Alternaria leaf blight control in bottle gourd

  • Yellow spots appear on leaves which turn brown and finally turn black on aging. 
  • They usually start from margins and produce concentric rings.  
  • Severely affected vines look like burnt charcoal.
  • Adopt clean cultivation and crop rotation cultural practices are adopted for prevention of disease. 
  • Spray Mancozeb 75% WP @ 400 gram/acre or hexaconazole 5% SC @ 300 ml/acre at 10-15 days intervals.
  • Spray chlorothalonil 75% WP @ 300 gram/acre at 10 days intervals.

Management of mosaic virus in bottle gourd

Plants go fully dry. Foliage is covered in distinctive yellow mosaic. Leaves of plant curl downwards and leaf size smaller than normal. Fruits become distorted and are small in size. Transmitted by aphids.

Management

  • Removing weeds and diseased plants from fields can reduce the chance of infection.
  • The use of resistance variety in another way some farmers control virus spread.
  • Vector control by using systemic insecticide- Imidacloprid (17.8% SL) @ 100-120 ml/acre or Acephate (75% SP) @ 140-200 g /acre.

Collar rot control in bottle gourd

  • Dark brown water-soaked lesions and girdling at the base of stem occurs. Finally, the entire plant to rot and die.
  • Cottony white mycelium in the surface of the infected tissue occurs with advanced infections.
  • Affected plants can be easily uprooted but the lower part of the root usually remains in soil.
  • Treat the seed with Carbendazim 50% WP @ 2.5  gm/kg of seed before sowing.
  • Drench vine with Mancozeb 63% + Carbendazim 12% WP @ 400 gm/acre or thiophanate methyl 70% WP @ 300 gm/acre are recommended for control.
  • Previous crop residues should be buried deep.
