Pest management in watermelon crop

  • Due to changes in weather, the possibility of pest infestation in the watermelon crop increases. At this time the watermelon crop is in the vegetative stage and somewhere in the fruiting stage. At these times, outbreaks of the following insects are mainly seen –

  • In the vegetative growth stage, the incidence of leaf miners, sucking insects like aphids, jassids, and thrips is more.

  • For their control, Spray Thiamethoxam 12.6% + Lambda Cyhalothrin 9.5% ZC [Novalaxam] @ 80 ml or Imidacloprid 40% + Fipronil 40% WG [Police] @ 40 gm or Abamectin 1.9% EC [Abacin] @ 150 ml/acre.

  • Apart from these insects, the attack of fruit flies and red pumpkin beetles is also seen on the crop.

  • For fruit fly control, spraying of Profenofos 40% + Cypermethrin 4% EC [Profenova super] @ 400 ml or Spinosad 45% SC [Tracer] @ 75 ml/acre can be done.

  • The use of pheromone trap 10 per acre is also beneficial for fruit fly control.

  • For control of Red Pumpkin Beetle, Spray Lambda Cyhalothrin 4.9% CS [LamNova] @ 250 ml or Bifenthrin 10% EC [Marker] @ 400 ml/acre.

  • For biological control of all these pests, use Beauveria bassiana [Bave curb] @ 500 gm/acre.
