Root rot problem and preventive measures due to excessive water logging in soybean crops

Root rot problem and preventive measures due to excessive water logging in soybean crops

Waterlogging refers to a condition when water is present in the field in excess of its optimum requirement. Excess water in the field causes the following losses :-

Due to excessive water logging in soybean crops, there is a hindrance in air circulation and a fall in soil temperature, as well as the activity of beneficial bacteria decreases, and the nitrogen fixation process is not done properly, due to which the roots of the plants are completely destroyed. Air, water, nutrients and free space are not available in quantity. And due to excessive water logging, harmful salts get collected due to which the problem of root rot is seen.

Drainage is necessary to reduce water logging in the field. It is a crop that can neither tolerate drought nor can tolerate excessive water. Therefore, for drainage, a drain should be prepared at the time of sowing and in case of waterlogging in the field, make additional drainage drains and take the water out from the field.

Know why Sulphur is necessary in soybean crops?

For the past years, emphasis was being laid on the use of only Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potash under balanced fertilizers. Due to lack of focus on the use of sulphur, deficiency of sulphur was found in the soil during soil testing. Sulphur deficiency is increasing continuously due to the use of sulphur free fertilizers like Urea, DAP, NPK and Muriate of Potash. Keeping this result in mind, it is very important to apply sulphur in the field.

  • Sulphur is an important element out of 18 essential elements required for proper growth and development of plants. It is very necessary to increase the oil content in oilseed crops. Sulphur is a secondary nutrient needed by plants in large quantities.

  • Proper nutritional management is very necessary for high yield of soybean, the demand of sulphur in soybean is maximum during seed filling. Because the amount of protein in soyabean  seeds is very high, the balance of sulphur and nitrogen nutrition is very important for proper protein formation in soybean during seed formation.

  • Mainly bentonite sulphur and conventional sulphur containing Fertilizers are used for sulphur supply in soybean crops. For quick and continuous supply of Sulphur in short duration crops like Soyabean, GROMOR SULPHUR 90% GR or GROMOR SULPHA MAX  90% GR @ 5 kg per acre can be applied.

How to do nutrient management in soybean crops?

Proper nutritional management and fertilizer application are very essential for high yield of soybean. The demand for nutrients in soybean is maximum from crop growth to seed filling.

  • While preparing the field one week before sowing, mix 4 tonnes of FYM + 2 kg of Kalichakra (Metrazium) and apply it in the soil per acre.

  • Use Soyabean Samriddhi Kit at the time of sowing (one kit per acre) “The products included in the kit are –Pro Combimax  (Consortia of PK bacteria) – 1 kg + Tri-coat maxx  (Seaweed, Amino, Humic) – 4 kg + Rhizobium for Soybean (Biovatika R Soya) – 1 kg” .

MOP 20 kg, DAP 40 kg, or (DAP 25 kg with SSP), SSP 50 kg, Ammonium Sulphate/Urea 15/8 kg with SSP, Caldan ( Cartap Hydrochloride) 5 kg OR Dantotsu Clothianidin 50% WDG 100 g, Zinc Sulphate 3 kg, sulphur 90% WG  5 kg.

Seed treatment is an essential process in soybean crops

  • In the soybean crop, it is very important to do seed treatment before sowing.

  • Seed treatment in soybean crops can be done both by biological and chemical methods.

  • Soybean is treated with both fungicides and insecticides.

  • To treat seed with fungicide,Carbendazim 12% + Mancozeb 63% [Carma Nova] @ 2.5 gm/kg seed or Carboxin 17.5% + Thiram 17.5% [Vitavax Ultra] @ 2.5 ml/kg seeds or Trichoderma viride  [Combat] @ 5-10 gm/kg seeds.

  • To treat seed with  insecticides , Thiamethoxam 30% FS [ThiaNova Super] @ 4 ml/kg of seed or Imidacloprid 48% FS [Gaucho] @ 1.25 ml/kg of seed.

  • To increase nitrogen fixation in soybean crops, treat with Rhizobium [Jev vatika -R Soya] @ 5 gm/kg of seeds.

  • By treating seeds with fungicides, soybean is protected from wilt, and root rot disease.

  • The seed germinates properly, and the germination percentage increases.

  • The initial development of the soybean crop is uniform.

  • Seed treatment with Rhizobium increases nodules in the roots of soybean crops and fixes more nitrogen.

  • By treating seed with insecticides, the soybean crop is protected from soil insects such as white grubs, ants, termites etc.

  • A good crop is also obtained in adverse conditions (low/high moisture).
