  • The maggot burrows into the fruits and sucks the sap.
  • Infested fruits decay and drop.
  • The fly mainly prefers tender fruits for egg laying.
  • Ovipositional punctures caused by adults also cause injury on fruits and fruit juices oozes out.
  • Collect and destroy infested fruits.
  • To prevent egg laying, fly traps(pheromone trap) can be set up in the field with 1% Methyl Eugenol or Citronella oil or Vinegar or Dextrose or Acetic acid or Lactic acid.
  • Cover developing fruits with paper or polythene cover immediately after anthesis pollination.
  • Maize plants grown in rows at a distance of 8-10 cm in cucurbit field is effective as flies rest on such tall plants.
  • Soil incorporation of Carbaryl 10 % dust can be made in fruit fly endemic areas.
  • Deep ploughing to expose hibernating stages.

Control of aphid in bitter gourd

  • The affected plants have to be uprooted and destroyed to prevent the spread of the disease.

Management of mosaic virus in bottle gourd

Plants go fully dry. Foliage is covered in distinctive yellow mosaic. Leaves of plant curl downwards and leaf size smaller than normal. Fruits become distorted and are small in size. Transmitted by aphids.

Management

  • Removing weeds and diseased plants from fields can reduce the chance of infection.
  • The use of resistance variety in another way some farmers control virus spread.
  • Vector control by using systemic insecticide- Imidacloprid (17.8% SL) @ 100-120 ml/acre or Acephate (75% SP) @ 140-200 g /acre.

Control of Leaf Hopper and Jassid in Snake gourd

  • Nymphs and adults are sucking the cell sap of leaves of snake gourd vines causing typical hopper burn symptoms.
  • Initially, leaf margins turn yellow in colour and finally dry off. Fruit size and quality are also reduced.
  • Soil application of Carbofuran 3 G @ 10 Kg/acre at the time of sowing.
  • Spray Profenophos 50% EC @ 400 Ml/acre or Acetamiprid 20% WP @ 80 gm/acre at fortnightly intervals starting with the appearance of the jassid.
  • Prophylactic spray of Neem oil-garlic mixture at fortnightly intervals is advantageous for avoiding pest incidence.

Control of Aphid in Mustard

  • Plants are infested at all the stages.
  • Both nymph and adults suck the sap from leaves, inflorescence or the developing pods.
  • Curling may occur for infested leaves and at advanced stage plants may wither and die.

Control Measures

  • Use crop rotation.
  • Apply a recommended dose of fertilizers.
  • Destroy the affected parts along with the aphid population in the initial stage.
  • Spray the crop with one of the following insecticides in the aphid appearance.
  • Imidacloprid 17.8% @ 100 ml/acre or Thiamethoxam 25 WG @ 75 gm/acre or Dimethoate 30 EC @ 325 ml/acre.
  • Spraying should be done in the evening time.

Control strategies of Maize Stem Borer

  • Central shoot withers and leading to “dead heart”.
  • Larvae mines the midrib enter the stem and feeds on the internal tissues.
  • Boreholes visible on the stem near the nodes.
  • Young larva crawls and feeds on tender folded leaves causing typical “shot hole” symptom.
  • Affected parts of the stem may show internally tunneling caterpillars.
  • In later stage, plant becomes die.

Control

 

  • Mix any one of the following granular insecticides with sand to make up a total quantity of 50 kg and apply in the leaf whorls on the 20th day after sowing.
    Phorate 10% G 4 kg/acre or Fipronil 0.3% G 5 kg/acre on 15-20 day after sowing.
  • If granular insecticides are not used, spray any one of the following:
    • Bifenthrin 10% EC @ 200 ml /acre on the 20th day of sowing.

 

  • Fipronil 5% SC @ 500 ml/ acre on the 20 day after sowing.
  • Cartap Hydrochloride 50% SP @ 400 gm/acre.

Control of fall armyworm in Maize

Damage:-

  • Fall armyworm generally feeds on foliage, but during heavy infestations, larvae will also feed on corn ears. 
  • Foliar damage to corn is usually characterized by ragged feeding and moist sawdust-like frass near the whorl and upper leaves of the plant.
  • They will frequently be near the tip but may feed down the ear creating a track of damaged kernels.

Control:-

  • Set up of light traps.
  • Set up sex pheromone traps at 5 /Acre.
  • Apply any one of the following on presence of pest.
  • Emamectin benzoate 5% SG @ 100 Gm per acre.
  • Fipronil 5% SC @ 400 ml per acre.
  • Cloropyriphas 50% EC @ 400 ml per acre.

  • Small green insects, adults are large pear-shaped green, yellow or pink in color.

Damage:-  

  • Suck the plant sap from leaves, flowers and pods.
  • The affected leaves often get cupped or become irregularly distorted, shoots become stunted and malformed.  
  • Honeydew secreted by the aphids encourages growth of Sooty mould.

Control:-

  • Spray the crop with Following insecticides at 15-20 days interval till the end of aphid population checked.
  1. Profenofos 50% EC @ 50 ml/ Pump.
  2. Acetamiprid 20 SP @ 10 gm/Pump.
  3. Imidacloprid 17.8% SL @ 7 ml/pump.
