  • Uneven irrigation of onion fields increases the chances of this disorder.
  • Fields that are over irrigated, allowed to dry completely and then over irrigated again often have many split bulbs.
  • Bulb mites are frequently associated with bulb splitting.
  • The first symptom is observed as the rotting of the basal portion of the bulb.
  • Secondary growth of the affected bulb often occurs when several small bulbs protruded from the spilt basal portion.

Control of Eriophyid mite in Garlic and Onion:-

  • Both adults and immatures feed on the young leaves and between the layers in cloves of Garlic and Onion. Leaves do not open completely.
  • Whole plant shows stunting, twisting, curling, and yellow mottling. Mottling is seen mostly on the edges of the leaves.
  • Acaricides like Sulphur 80% WP@ 3 Gm per liter of water gives effective control of mites.
  • Twice spraying of Propargite 57% EC @ 400 ml/Acre in 7 days interval helps in controlling the pest in initial stage.

Stemphylium blight:- 

 

  • Small yellowish to orange spots or streaks in the middle of leaves and flower stalks appear on one side.  
  • Later stage elongated spindle-shaped spots surrounded by pinkish margin developed in the middle of leaves.  
  • The disease appearing on the inflorescence stalk causes severe damage to the seed crop.

Cutworms in onion

  • Young larvae are yellowish-grey and later become brown, greasy to touch and coil when disturbed.
  • Cutworm moth is generally dark grey-brown colour with varying mottled pattern or spots on their forewing.
  • They cut the onion seedlings at ground level during the night and hide during the day.  
  • Young larvae feed gregariously on onion foliage but later segregate and enter into the soil.

Stem and bulb nematode in Onion and Garlic

Stem and bulb nematode in Onion and Garlic:- Nematode enters through stoma or plant wounds and create galls or malformations in plant growth. This allows for the entrance of secondary pathogens like fungi and bacteria.  Symptoms are stunted growth, discoloration of bulbs, and swollen stems.

Management:-

  • Bulbs that show signs of disease should not be planted.
  • Proper sanitation of fields and tools is essential because this nematode can survive and reproduce in infected plants and residues.
  • Apply Carbofuron 3% Granular @ 10 kg/ acre in the soil for better control of Nematodes.
  • Apply Neem Cake @ 200 Kg/ Acre in the soil for organic control of Nematodes.

Management of Downy Mildew in Onions

Management of Downy Mildew in Onions:-

Symptoms:-

  • Violet colour fungus on the surface of leaves or flower stalk, which later becomes pale greenish yellow colour.
  • Finally, the leaves or seed stalks collapses.
  • The disease is worst in damp condition, late planting and application of higher doses of fertilizer and numerous irrigation.

Control

  • Onion bulb used for seed crop should be exposed to sunlight for 12 days to destroy the fungus.
  • Spray with Mancozeb + Metalxyl or Carbendazim + Mancozeb @ 400 Gm/Acre at fort night interval.
