Gundhi bug pest that damages the paddy crop

Gundhi bug pest that damages the paddy crop
  • It is a major pest in the paddy crop during flowering, grain formation and later. This pest has 3 major stages, Egg (looks like a seed), Nymph (red-eye, green colour), Adult (brown colour). Both adults and nymphs damage the crop.

  • In the case of high infestation, the yield is reduced by 50%. Also, crop straw tastes unpleasant which cattles may find inedible.

  • The field smells bad when the insect attacks the crop. That’s why this insect is known as the gundhi bug. In the milky stage of the grain, the insect’s nymphs and adults damage the crop by sucking the milk of the grain. Some grains appear hollow and some semi-hollow. Due to peeling, brown spots appear on the husk of the grains, along with the grains turning brownish and the inflorescences becoming erect. In case of a severe outbreak, the stalk appears grainless.

  • For its management keep the field and bunds free of weeds and grasses.

  • Strict vigilance is necessary at the milking stage.

  • Netting and handpicking the bugs reduces their numbers.

  • Use of late-maturing varieties.

  • For chemical control, spray Quinalphos 25% EC 400 ml + Neem oil @ 10000 ppm @ 300 ml per acre.

Put the wire in the fields at a subsidy of 70%, get protection from animals

Put wire in the fields at a subsidy of 70%

Crops have to suffer a lot due to stray animals. Especially vegetables, flowers, fruits, spices, cereals and medicinal crops suffer losses up to 40% due to this. The only reason for this wastage is that the farms are not safe and the government is making many schemes to overcome this problem.

The Department of Horticulture has planned to provide 50 to 70% subsidy for chain fencing or wire fencing of fields. Under this scheme, it will be implemented in about 20 blocks first. If good results of the scheme are visible in these blocks, then approval will be given for this scheme in the entire state.

Infestation of aphid in Cucumber

Infestation of aphid in Cucumber
  • Nymphs and adult insects, both are soft-bodied, pear-shaped and blackish in colour.

  • Large colonies of nymphs and adults are found on tender twigs and shoots as well as on the ventral leaf surface sucking the vital sap from the tissues.

  • The affected parts turn yellow, curls, wrinkles and deform in shape and ultimately dries and perishes.

  • Fruit size and quality are also reduced.

  • The aphids also produce copious quantities of honeydew on which sooty mould develops which in turn hinders the photosynthetic activity of the vines, resulting in stunted growth.

  • For its control spray IMIDACLOPRID 17.8% SL @ 100ml/acre OR ACEPHATE 75 %SP@ 300 gm/acre OR ACETAMIPRID  20 % SP @ 100 gm/acre.

  • As a biological treatment, use BEAUVERIA BASSIANA @ 250 gm/acre.
