In history, India was known for spices all over the world. There were many types of spices in India and black pepper was prominent among them. But this monopoly of black pepper was ended by the Chilli which came with the Portuguese, yes the chilli was first introduced in India in 1498 and the Portuguese brought it to Goa first.
Chilli was well liked by the people of India and soon its cultivation started in India as well. Today in the whole world, India is the king of Chilli in every sense. India is the largest producer, consumer and exporter of chilli on the world stage. Chilli is cultivated here in an area of about 751 thousand hectares, which produces about 2149 thousand metric tons. So in the battle of sharpness, the native pepper lost to the foreign pepper.
