Suitable Climate and Soil for Tomato Cultivation:-

Suitable Climate:-

  • Tomato is a day neutral warm season crop.
  • Cool and dry weather is preferred by crop and optimum temperature is 21-28°C during day and 15-20°C during night.
  • Optimum temperature for colour development of fruit is 21-24°C.
  • It cannot be grown successfully in regions of higher rainfall.

Suitable Climate:-

  • The tomato grows on all soils from light sandy to heavy soil.
  • Well drained light soils are good for an early crop while clay loam and silt loam soils are well suited for heavy yields.
  • The pH of the soil should be 7-8.5.

Disease Free Nursery Raising For Tomato

Disease Free Nursery Raising For Tomato:-

  • Healthy seed should be selected for sowing.
  • The seed should be treated with recommended fungicide before sowing.
  • Continuous raising of nursery in the same plot should be avoided.
  • The top soil of nursery should be treated with carbendazim @ 5 gm/square m. are of the soil and nursery should be drenched with carbendazim @ 2gm/litre of water at fortnightly interval.
  • Soil solarization by spreading 250 gauge polythene sheet over the bed for 30 days before sowing in summer season should be done.
  • Application of bio-control agent tricoderma viride in soil @ 1.2 kg/ha is also found effective to control damping-off to considerable extent.

Land Preparation forTomato:-

  • The field is ploughed to fine tilth by giving four to five ploughing with a sufficient interval between two ploughing.
  • Well decomposed FYM (15-20 tonnes/ha.) is thoroughly incorporated at the time of land preperation.
  • Total P & K and third of nitrogen can be applied basally.

Staking in Tomato:-

  • It is done 2-3 weeks after transplanting.
  • For indeterminate type of tomato, two or three wires are stretched parallel to each other along the row palnts are loosely tied to these wires or other horizontal stakes.
  • The timely stakes plants produce and maintain better quality fruits.

Control of Early Blight of Tomato

  • The fungus attacks the foliage causing characteristics leaf spots and blight.
  • Small, isolated, scattered pore brown spot appear on the leaf.
  • Fully developed spots are irregular, brown, to dark brown in colour and with concentric ring (2-5mm ) inside the spot.
  • Symptoms start from the lowest leaves and progress upward.

Control:-

  • Spray 2 g Mancozeb 75 WP + 10 g urea per litre of water at 15 days interval when symptoms start or Carbendazim 12%+ Mancozeb 63% WP @ 50 Gm/15 litre water or Copper oxychloride 50% WP@ 50 Gm/ 15 litre water.

Control of Powdery mildew in Tomato

It is caused by the fungus Leveillulataurica. Initially light green to bright yellow spots appear on the upper surface of the leaves. A light powdery covering is visible on the leaves and green leaves turn yellow in colour and rot. For effective control, spray Hexaconazole 5% SC @ 30 ml/ 15 litre water or sulphur 80% WDG @ 50 Gm/15 litre Water.

Control of Red spider mite in Tomato

Mites are very minute. Their nymphs and adults suck the cell sap from lower side of leaves. For effective control, spraying Propargite 57% EC @ 50 ml/15 litre water or dicofol 18.5 EC @ 30 ml/15 litre water or sulphur 80 % WDG @ 50 g/15 Litre water or spiromesifen 45.2% oz @ 15 ml/15 litre water.
