Prevention of bulb nematodes in onion and garlic before sowing

  • Bulb nematode in Onion and Garlic:- Nematode enters through stomata or plant wounds and creates galls or malformations in plant growth.

  • This allows for the entrance of secondary pathogens like fungi and bacteria. Symptoms are stunted growth, discolouration of bulbs, and swollen stems.

Management:

  • Apply Carbofuran 3% granular insecticide@ 8 kg/ acre in soil for better control of Nematodes.

  • Apply Paecilomyces lichenous (nematofree) @ 1 kg/acre or Neem Cake @ 200 Kg/ acre in soil for biological control of Nematodes.

  • Bulbs that show signs of this disease should not be kept as seeds.

  • Proper sanitation of fields and tools is essential because this nematode can survive and reproduce in infected plants and residues.
