Management of diseases affecting watermelon crop

  • The market demand for watermelon is high during summer. To get good fruit production from the watermelon crop, it is important to take care of plant protection from the sowing to harvest. The symptoms and management of some major diseases that damage the watermelon crop are as follows –

  • In Downy mildew disease, yellow spots on the upper surface of the leaves and brown powder is deposited on the lower surface.  In powdery mildew disease, a white powdery appearance appears on the upper and lower surface of the leaves. For management of both these diseases, spray Azoxystrobin 11% + Tebuconazole 18.3% SC [Custodia] @ 300 ml per acre.

  • Gummy stem blight disease, also known as gummosis blight, one of the main symptoms of this disease is that a sticky substance like gum comes out from the affected stem. For its management, Spray Chlorothalonil 75% WP [Jatayu] @ 300 gm/ acre.

  • In anthracnose disease, fruits start falling without ripening, causing a heavy loss in yield. For its management, spray Kasugamycin 5% + Copper Oxychloride 45% WP [Conika] @ 300 gm/acre.
