Major sucking pests that damage moong crop

  • The major sucking insects that damage the green gram crop are aphids and jassids, thrips, whitefly etc. They damage the crop by sucking the sap from the soft parts of the crop like leaves, flowers, pods etc. If these pests are properly identified and managed at the proper time, then a considerable part of the produce can be saved from destruction.

  • Aphids and Jassids: The leaves of the infested plant turn yellow and shrivel. In case of severe infestation, the leaves dry up and gradually the whole plant dries up. For their management, spray Acetamiprid 20%SP [Novaceta] 100 gm or Thiamethoxam 25% WG [ThiaNova 25] 100 gm /acre.

  • Thrips: This insect is found on the upper surface of the leaves and in more quantity on the lower surface of the leaves. The leaves of the affected plant appear dry, curled up and withered.

  • For its management, spray Fipronil 5% SC [FipNova] @ 400 ml or Spinosad 45% SC [Tracer] @ 75 ml/acre.

  • Whitefly: The leaves of the affected plant dry up and fall. This insect is a vector of yellow vein mosaic virus disease. For whitefly management, spray Diafenthiuron 50% WP [Pager] @ 250 gm or Flonicamid 50% WG [Panama] @ 60 ml or Acetamiprid 20% SP [Novaceta] @ 100 gm/acre.
