Irrigation in Bitter Gourd

Irrigation in Bitter Gourd:-

  • Bitter gourd cannot tolerate drought or water stagnation.
  • Water the crop immediately after sowing or planting on third day and then once a week depends upon the soil moisture.
  • Maintain good soil moisture in the upper 50 cm. of soil where the majority of roots are located.

Irrigation in Moong (Green Gram)

Irrigation in Moong (Green Gram):- Moong is mainly grown as a kharif crop. If needed provide irrigation depending upon the climatic conditions.  For summer season crop, three to five irrigations are required depending upon soil type and climatic condition. For good yield stop irrigation 55 days after sowing.

Irrigation Water quality

The water quality used for irrigation is essential for the yield and quantity of crops, maintenance of soil productivity, and protection of the environment. For example, the physical and mechanical properties of the soil, ex. soil structure (stability of aggregates) and permeability are very sensitive to the type of exchangeable ions present in irrigation waters.

Irrigation water quality can best be determined by chemical laboratory analysis. The most important factors to determine the suitability of water use in agriculture are the following:

  • PH
  • Salinity Hazard
  • Sodium Hazard (Sodium Adsorption Ration or SAR)
  • Carbonate and bicarbonates in relation with the Ca & Mg Content
  • Other trace elements
  • Toxic anions
  • Nutrients
  • Free chlorine

Irrigation management in Onion

Irrigation requirement of onion depends upon the season, soil type, method of irrigation and age of the crop. In general, onion needs irrigation at the time of transplanting, three days after transplanting and subsequently at 7-10 days interval depending upon the soil moisture. In general, Kharif crop needs 5-8 irrigations, the late Kharif crop requires 10-12 and Rabi crop needs 12-15 irrigations. Onion being a shallow rooted crop, needs frequent light irrigation to maintain optimum soil moisture for proper growth and bulb development. Irrigation needs to be stopped when the crop attains maturity (10-15 days before harvest) and the top starts falling which helps in reducing the rotting during storage.

Management of Irrigation in Garlic

Management of Irrigation in Garlic:-

  • The first irrigation should be done after planting. After three days of germination it should be irrigated again.
  • After this, irrigation should be done in 10-15 days. In summer should be irrigated in 5-7 days.
  • When tubers mature, irrigation should be reduced. Overall 15 irrigation needs are required.
  • Moisture should not be reduced in soil during the developing of Bulb, there is adverse effect on the growth of the end tuber.

Irrigation in Gram

Irrigation in Gram:-

  • Heavy irrigation is not required in Gram.
  • Two irrigations given at branching ( Before Flowering) and pod development stage registered significantly higher grain yield in some regions but one irrigation given at branching ( Before Flowering) was found optimum to increase the grain yield.
