21-day lockdown: Government has given special exemption to farmers

At this time, the whole world is troubled by the increasing cases of the coronavirus. In India also, the central government has imposed a 21-day nationwide lockdown amid growing infection of the virus. This means that all offices, markets, means of transport etc. will be closed in the entire country for 21 days. This news created a situation of confusion among Indian farmers. But the government has ended this confusion by giving special exemption for the farmers even in the lockdown.

Actually, the farmers have to purchase many agricultural products like fertilizer and seeds for their crops. In such a situation, if they wouldn’t have got these products due to lockdown, then they would have to face a lot of trouble. Keeping in mind these problems of the farmers, the government has announced a discount for farmers on the purchase of products like seeds and fertilizers. This means that the farmers will be able to meet their agricultural requirements easily, even during the lockdown period.

Government signed $80M loan with the world bank to develop agriculture

The Agriculture sector holds a significant contribution to the Indian economy. Which means, improving agriculture will strengthen the economy too. That is why the government has also started focusing more and more on the agriculture sector since the last few years. In the same episode, the Government of Himachal Pradesh signed an $80 million loan agreement with the World Bank to develop the state’s agriculture.

This amount will be spent mainly on improving water management practices and increasing agricultural productivity in various Gram Panchayats of Himachal Pradesh. According to a media report, this project will be executed in 10 districts of the state covering 428 Gram Panchayats. It will benefit around 400,000 smallholder farmers.

This project will be very beneficial for the farmers of Himachal Pradesh, as many of the lowland areas of the state lack sufficient water for irrigation and are chiefly dependent on rainwater. But the constant decrease in the rainfall and climate change is affecting the production of fruits grown in Himachal Pradesh, including its iconic apples. This step could also play a big role in contributing to the central government’s mission of doubling the farmers’ incomes.

Good news for farmers, government lifted the ban on onion exports

Gramophone's onion farmer

To protect the interests of farmers, the government has lifted the six-month-old ban on the export of onions on 26th February. This decision will provide farmers with a big market for their onion crop and thus they can earn more profit. There was a major need for such step as the prices are likely to fall heavily due to bumper production of rabi crops especially onion.

It should be noted that in September 2019, the government had imposed a ban on the export of onions due to the rapid increase in its prices. But the conditions have changed now and the onion rates had stabilized. Along with this, there has been a rapid growth of onions this year in the country, because of which, Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan has announced to lift the ban on the export of onions.
