  • About 70 cm. distance is kept between two beds to carry out intercultural operations.
  • The surface of nursery beds should be smooth and well leveled.
  • Well decomposed FYM @ 8-10 kg/square meter should be added at the time of bed preparation.
  • Raised beds avoid the problem of water logging in heavy soils.
  • To avoid mortality of seedlings due to damping off, drench the beds three weeks before sowing with carbendazim 50% WP @ 15-20 gm/ 10 liter of water. OR Apply Thiophanate Methyl 70% WP @ 0.5 gram/meter2

How to maintain healthy chilli nursery

A major Problem:- Damping off

  1. In the nursery the disease may appear in patches, Seedlings die due to this disease before or after emergence.
  2. If we carefully dig down into the soil, you will find seeds that have become soft and mushy which will start to disintegrate.
  3. The stem of young seedlings showing water soaking lesions, brownish color and shriveling of the stem which fall over and die.
  4. Optimal conditions for the development of the disease are:- Poor drainage, High relative humidity (90-100%) and higher soil temperature (20-28 °C)

Management

  • Provide light, but frequent irrigation with better drainage.
  • Thiophanate methyl applies on soil 0.5 gm/square meter at the time of nursery bed preparation.
  • Second Spray at 20 DAS:- Metalaxyl-M ( Mefanoxam ) 4% + Mancozeb 64% WP 500 gm/acre.

  • Raise nursery beds at least 10 cm high.
  • Treat the seeds with carbendazim @ 2 gm/kg of seed.
  • To avoid mortality of seedlings due to damping off, drenching of the beds with Mancozeb 75% WP @ 400-600 gm/acre, is effective.

  • Treat the seed before sowing with carboxin 37.5% + thiram 37.5% @ 2 gm/kg seed.

Damping Off Disease in Brinjal

Damping Off Disease in Brinjal:-

  • Seeds may rot before germination or seedlings may die prior to emergence.

Management:-

  • Healthy seed should be selected for sowing.
  • The seed should be treated with Thiram @ 2 g/kg of seed before sowing.
  • Continuous raising of nursery in the same plot should be avoided.
  • The top soil of nursery should be treated with Carbendazim 50% WP @ 5 g/m area of the soil and nursery should be drenched with Carbendazim+Mancozeb 75% WP @ 3 g/litre of water at fortnightly interval.
  • Soil solarization by spreading 250 gauge polythene sheet over the bed for 30 days before sowing in summer season in the month of May should be done.
  • Application of bio-control agent Trichoderma viride in soil @ 1.2 kg/ha is also found effective to control damping-off to considerable extent.
