What is the suitable climate for the cultivation of pumpkin, bitter gourd, cucumber, watermelon, etc.?

  • Cucurbitaceae crops are a subtropical vegetable and require hot and humid climatic conditions for its fast growth and higher yield.
  • Night and Day temperature of 18-22° C and 30-35° C respectively is optimum for its proper growth and high fruit set.

Field preparation of Cucumber

  • In the initial stage, the field is ploughed 4-5 times to make the land Friable and before the final ploughing, add 10-15 tons of ripe cow dung manure per acre of land.
  • If the soil is infested with nematodes & white ants or red ants, apply Carbofuran at the rate of 10 kg/acre. 
  • After levelling the field, 60 cm wide channels are made at a distance of 2.0- to 2.5 cm.
  • The length of the channel depends on the source of irrigation, season, rainfall and slope land.

  • Treat the seed with Carbendazim 50% WP @ 2.5 gm/kg.

Anthracnose disease in Cucumber

  • Different types of symptoms are observed on leaves, petioles, stem, and fruits.
  • On young fruits, numerous water-soaked depressed oval spots appear, which coalesce covering large areas.  
  • Under humid conditions, pink masses of spores can be seen in the center of these spots.  
  • Pink gummy exudation may also be seen on lesions due to the exudation of spores.
  • Vines have brownish specks that grow into angular to circular spots.  
  • The girdling of the affected portion leads to blight symptoms.

Weed management in cucumber

  • During the early stages of the crop, Field should be kept clean by weeding.
  • First and second weeding should be done 20-25 days and 45-50 days after sowing respectively.
  • Once the plants cover the field, there is no need to weeding.
  • The cucumbers grow in mandap or Staking, spray the Paraquat Dichloride 24% SL (gramoxone) or Glyphosate 41%SL @ 1 litre/acre in the middle of the row, because it is a non-selective weedicide, Therefore the hood is necessary, its use for all types of weed in cucumber.

  • The cucumber plant is a shallow rooted crop and  no deep intercultural operations are required.
  • Earthing up is essential to cover the roots  properly especially in rainy season crop.
