  • Cowpea is a warm season crop and can be grown in all tropical and subtropical areas.
  • Grain types and dual purpose types are tolerant to hardy conditions including high temperature, and poor soil.

  • Performance of varieties varies with day length, rainfall and temperature hence specific varieties are to be selected for each season.

Ideal soil for cowpea cultivation

  • Cowpea can be grown almost in any type of soil but well-drained loamy or slightly heavy soils are better.
  • Saline or alkaline soils are not good.
  • Ideal soil pH for growth of cowpea is 5.5-6.0.

Control of cowpea pod borer

  • Then caterpillars bore into the pods and feed on the seeds.    
  • If flowers and pods are not available, larva feeds on foliage.
  • Application of deep plowing and clean cultivation to expose the resting pupae and crop rotation reduce the pest population.
  • Use tolerant/resistant varieties.
  • Fix 3 feet sticks in the field @10/ha as bird parches to attract predatory birds  
  • Spray chlorpyrifos 20% EC 450 ml/ acre or indoxacarb 14.5% SC @ 160-200 ml/ acre.
  • Spray solution of emamectin benzoate 5% SG@ 100 gm/acre.

Time of sowing of Cowpea

Time of sowing of Cowpea:-

  • In most of the areas, cowpea is grown during the rainy and summer season.
  • Kharif Season:- Sowing is June-July for pole type variety. Sowing is August- September for early maturing bush type varieties.
  • Summer Season:- Sowing is February- March is common for summer.

Control of Leaf Miner in Cowpea

Leaf Miner in Cowpea:-

Indentification:-

  • The adults are small delicate flies about 1/6 inch in length.
  • They are black and yellowish colour.
  • Eggs are round, microscopic and vary in colour from yellow to white.
  • The larvae, white yellowish coloration near the head are about 1/6 inch when fully grown.

Damage:-

  • A female lays about 300 to 400 eggs thrusting these in to leaf tissues with the help of sharp and pointed ovipositor.
  • On hatching the maggots mines the leaves in a zigzag fashion feeding on mesophyll with in these mines.
  • The infestation of this fly can easily be recognized by the presence of shiny whitish streaks on the leaves against the green background.
  • Adults puncture the leaves and feed on exuding sap.
  • The flowering and fruiting capacity of in infested plants is adversely affected.

Control:-

  • Spray the crop with Dichlorovos (2 ml/lit) +Neem oil (2 Ml/litre ) or Cartap hydrochloride 75 SG (1.5 gm/Litre) of water at fortnight intervals starting from 25 days after sowing to control the pest.
