Suitable soil for Cauliflower

  • Cultivation of cauliflower is done mainly on sandy to heavy soil rich in organic matter.
  • Light soil is preferred for early crops.
  • On heavy soil, plants grow more slowly and the keeping quality is improved.
  • The optimum pH is 6-7 and liming is required when pH is below 5.5.
  • Plants growing in saline soils are prone to fungal and bacterial diseases.

Soil preparation for cauliflower

  • 1 to 2 corrosive ploughing by a soil turning plough followed by 3 to 4 ploughing with desi plough are enough for it.
  • Well rotten compost or farmyard manure is mixed in soil at the time of ploughing.
  • If the soil is infested with nematodes Carbofuran @ 10 kg/Acre.
  • Ridges and furrow type of layout is used for crop.

  • The planting distance may vary according to variety early, mid and late.
  • planting seasons (Rabi, Kharif and Zaid ) and soil conditions (light, medium and heavy).
  • The following distances are generally recommended on the basis of maturity of varieties.
  • For early varieties:- 45 X 45 cm.
  • For mid  varieties:- 60 X 40 cm.
  • For late  varieties:- 60 X 60 cm. or 60 X45 cm.

Suitable Climate for Cauliflower:-

  • The cauliflower varieties are very sensitive to temperature.
  • For good germination, a temperature of 10-21°C  is required.
  • A temperature range at 15-21°C is optimum for growth and curd formation.  Temperature below 10°C during growth delays maturity and undersized small unmarketable buttons are formed.
  • High temperature during maturity will result in yellowish leafy curds.
  • It is therefore essential to choose proper variety to be sown at proper time.

Control Of Downy Mildew in Cauliflower

Control Of Downy Mildew in Cauliflower:-

  • The stem shows dark brown, depressed lesions which later develop downy growth of the fungus.
  • On leaves, purplish-brown spots appear on the under surface followed by appearance of downy growth on such lesions.
  • It causes damage to curd, producing curd-rot.

Control:-

  • Give hot water treatment to seed at 50°C for 30 min with Thiram(0.3%).
  • Remove the diseased portions of the curd and apply copper oxychloride 50% WP @ 3 Gm/ litre to the cut surface.
  • Spray the crop with Mancozeb 75% WP@ 400 Gm/Acre at 10-15 days intervals, first spray be given on the appearance of symptoms.
  • Follow crop rotation and sanitation practices.

Irrigation in Cauliflower:-

  • Maintenance of proper soil moisture is necessary for harvesting good curds.
  • First irrigation is given just after transplanting of seedlings.
  • Subsequent irrigation is given at 8 to 10 days interval depending upon the season and soil condition.
  • For early and mid season cultivars irrigation depends upon intensity of the monsoon.
  • Furrow irrigation is more common method of irrigation under double row planting system.

  • The optimum time of seed sowing in the nursery varies greatly depending upon climatic condition, varieties and their temperature requirement for curd formation.
  • Early season varieties seeds are sown during May to June.

  • Mid late season varieties seeds are sown during August.
  • Late season varieties  seeds are sown during September to October.

Weed Control in Cauliflower

Weed Control in Cauliflower:-

  • Crop should be kept free from weeds either manually or by use of weedicides.
  • Field is kept free of weeds by 2-3 hand weeding and 1-2 hoeing. Hoeing should not be deep.
  • After transplanting spray of 3.-3.5 litre of pendamethalin 30% EC per hectare is effective for control of weeks up to 45 days.
