  • The use of fertilizers and fertilizers depends on the condition of the soil.
  • Add farmyard manure @ 11 tonnes/acre at the time of field preparation.
  • Application of 30 kg urea, 80 kg single super phosphate and 30 kg muriate of potash per acre at the time of final field preparation.
  • Apply another 60 kg urea per acre in 2-3 split doses at the time of vining and initial fruit set.

Irrigation in Bottle gourd

  • Irrigate the field before dibbling the seeds and thereafter once a week.
  • February – March sown crop, first irrigation is given 2-3 days after sowing.
  • After that irrigation givens at 7-8 day interval.

Drip irrigation

  • Install drip system with main and sub-main pipes and place the inline lateral tubes at an interval of 1.5 m. Place the drippers at an interval of 60 cm and 50 cm spacing with 4 LPH and 3.5 LPH capacities respectively.

Fertilizer requirements in Bottle gourd

  • Add farmyard manure @ 10 tonnes/acre at the time of field preparation.
  • Application of 30 kg urea, 80 kg single super phosphate and 30 kg muriate of potash per acre at the time of field preparation.
  • Apply another 30 kg urea per acre in 2-3  split doses at the time of vining and initial fruit set.
  • Total P & K and one-third of Nitrogen can be applied basally about 8-10 cm away from the seeds.
  • Nitrogen deficiency causes yellowing of vine and foliage and checks the vegetative growth.
  • Deficiency of K reduces plant height and area of foliage causing flower drop and checks the fruiting.

Sowing method and seed rate of Bottle gourd

  • Soak seeds in water for 24-48 hrs to facilitate germination.
  • About 1 to1.5 kg seed is enough for an acre.
  • Four to five seeds are sown per pit.
  • Remove unhealthy plants after two weeks and retain three plants per lit.
  • 300-500 gm/acre seed for hybrid and private sector varieties. seed rate varies on variety to variety and sowing spacing.

Seed Treatment in Bottle gourd

  • For good quality, diseases and insect free yield the seed must be treat before sowing with the below products.
  • Seed treat with carbendazim 12% + mancozeb 63% fungicide 2 gm/kg seed or carboxin 37.5% + thiram 37.5% fungicide 2gm/kg of seed.
  • Seed should be treated with imidacloprid 600 FS (48%) 1 ml/kg seeds for control of Sucking pest on early stage.

  • The land is ploughed with disc harrow followed by three cross ploughing.
  • Well rotten compost or farmyard manure is mixed in soil at the time of ploughing.
  • Planting after last two ploughing with the soil pulverized and leveled.
  • If the soil is infested with nematodes Carbofuran @ 10 kg/Acre.
  • After levelling the field 40-50 cm wide make a distance of 2.0 to 2.5 cm.

Climate-

  • Bottle gourd is a subtropical vegetable and requires hot and humid climatic condition for its fast growth and higher yield.
  • Slight wet to semi dry ecological condition is suitable for this crop.
  • Night and day temperature of 18-22°C and 30-35°C respectively is optimum for its proper growth and high fruit set.
  • The seed germination is fast at the temperature range of 25-30°C.
  • The crop grown at optimum temperature has higher proportion of female flower and fruit/plant.

Soil-

  • Bottle gourd can be grown on all types of the soil if it is not too much acidic or saline and alkaline.
  • Loam or sandy loam soil is most suitable for bottle guards.
  • The soil should be rich in organic matter and with good drainage.
