  • Due to excessive deficiency of phosphorus, the stem turns dark yellow, and the formation of fruits and seeds is immature.

How to control the problem of Root Rot in ginger crop

  • This is one of the most damaging diseases of ginger. In the early stage of infection, the leaves start yellowing from the edges while the central part of the leaves remains green. Later the yellowing spreads to all the leaves. Infected shoots can be easily pulled out of the soil.

  • The infection starts at the collar region of the pseudostems and progresses upwards as well as downwards. The collar region of the affected pseudostem becomes water-soaked and the rot spreads to the rhizome resulting in soft rot and drying of the pseudostem. 

  • Management: As it is a seed-borne disease, the use of healthy rhizomes before sowing is one of the most important preventive measures.

  • Plan to plant early during April and avoid waterlogging in the field.

  • In case of disease, collect the diseased parts and bury them in the soil somewhere far away or burn them.

  • Do drenching Metalaxyl 4% + Mancozeb 64%WP @ 600 gm or Kasugamycin 5% + Copper Oxychloride 45% WP @ 300 gm or Chlorothalonil 75% WP @ 400 gm per acre.

  • Trichoderma viride @ 1 kg per acre can be used for biological management.

The low-pressure area formed in the Bay of Bengal is now moving towards Gujarat. Due to this, good rains are expected in Gujarat as well as in Southwest and East Rajasthan. Heavy rains will occur in many districts of West Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. Rain activities will reduce in Delhi from tomorrow. Light to moderate rain will continue over East India. Monsoon rains are also likely to reduce somewhat over South India.

  • High soil moisture and moderate temperature along with high humidity, especially in the rainy season leads to the development of this disease.  

  • Pre-emergence damping off results in seed and seedling rot before emerging from the soil.  

  • Post-emergence damping-off results in pathogens attacking the collar region of seedlings on the surface of the soil.  

  • The collar portion rots and ultimately the seedling collapses and dies. 

  • Healthy seeds should be selected before sowing.

  • Spray of CARBENDAZIM 12% + MANCOZEB 63% WP@ 30 gram /pump or THIOPHANATE METHYL 70% W/W @ 30 gm/Pump or MANCOZEB 64%+ METALAXYL 8% WP @ 60 gram/pump.

This American pest causes great damage to tomato crop

  • The American pinworm [Tuta absoluta] is one of the major and important pests of tomato. Tuta absoluta is a serious pest that is highly harmful in all stages of its life cycle. IPM practices can be adopted to avoid and manage the pest throughout its life cycle. The crop losses are as high as 60 to 100% due to the infestation by Tuta absoluta. Its infection is visible on buds, leaves and stems, flowers and fruits, on which a fine powdery layer with black spots appears.

  • It burrows in the leaves and eats the lamina of the leaves, affecting the photosynthetic activity, as well as making them inedible by piercing the fruits.

  • For its management follow crop rotation with non-solanaceous crops (preferably cruciferous crops).

  • Infested leaves need to be removed before the caterpillar inside the leaf is able to pupate and become an egg-laying adult moth.

  • The use of pheromone traps is beneficial.

  • For Chemical Control Spray Cyantraniliprole 10.26 % Od @ 240 ml + Neem oil 10000 ppm @ 200 ml or Quinalphos 25% Ec 400 ml + Abamectin 1.9% Ec 150 ml + Neem oil 10000 ppm @ 200 ml or  Lambda Cyhalothrin 5% Ec + Neem oil 10000 ppm @ 200 ml per acre.

Torrential rains are likely in many parts of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. After a long time, the dry districts of western Rajasthan and Gujarat will also get relief from the rain. Light to moderate rain will occur over Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and West Uttar Pradesh. The continuing heavy rainfall over Kerala and Karnataka will now reduce. Light to moderate rain and thundershowers are possible over East Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and Jharkhand.
