Weed management in wheat crop

Weed management in wheat crop
  • Weeds cause heavy damage to the wheat crop. They get the nutrient and moisture requirement directly from the soil and plant and thus compete with crop plants for light, moisture and space, thereby reducing crop yield. The presence of weeds can reduce crop yield by up to 35 percent.

  • Following are the major weeds prevalent in wheat fields –

  • Bathua, Gazari, Katili, Krishnanil, Akari, Senji, Chatari Matiyari, Gehusa, Wild oats, Pyazi etc. cause serious problems in wheat fields. Apart from these, Dub grass is a major perennial weed.

  • After 30-35 days of sowing in wheat, weed management can be done by using the following weedicides.

  • For mixed weeds, use Clodinafop Propargyl 15% + Metsulfuron Methyl 1% WP 160 gm/acre.

  • For narrow leaf weeds – use Clodinafop Propargyl WP 15% 160 gm/acre.

  • For broadleaf weeds – 2,4-D Amine salt 58% SL 400 ml/acre can be used.

  • Keep in mind that weedicide can be used till the 2-4 leaf stage in the crop.
