Gondia district of Maharashtra state is known for the cultivation of paddy. The farmers here are afraid to take the risk of an alternative crop other than paddy. Meanwhile, Pallavi Vaibhav Gajabhiye, a resident of Dongargaon, has set an example by earning lakhs of rupees through alternative farming.
Pallavi lost her husband during the second wave of Corona. However, in this hour of crisis, it was his first responsibility to feed his family. In such a situation, without losing his courage, he decided to do farming. Pallavi decided to cultivate vegetables using modern technology. For this, he cultivated cucumber in 2021-22 under the guidance of officers-employees of the Agriculture Department.
In the cultivation of cucumber, a total expenditure of 2 lakh 50 thousand was incurred including land preparation, seeds, fertilizers, insecticides, bamboo, plastic mulching, drip irrigation and labour. In this, he received grants for plastic mulching and drip irrigation under the Krishi Irrigation Scheme and Integrated Campaign. In this cultivation, he got a production of 36 metric tonnes of cucumber. Earned lakhs after selling it in the agricultural produce market at a price of Rs.12. After deducting the cost, Pallavi earned a total profit of Rs. 1 lakh 86 thousand.
Please note that the crop period of cucumber is only 3 months. The harvest season comes thrice a year. Cultivation of vegetables as such an alternative crop is a profitable decision. By adopting this, Pallavi Vaibhav Gajabhiye has become an inspiration for other farmers.
